My life has been a bit of a rollercoaster. Lots of change, movement and resettlement. Rarely have things stayed the same. There was one thing that stayed consistent amongst all the different directions I was being pulled towards though, and that is: watching Lionel Messi play the beautiful game.
“We always think of endings, we rarely ever think of beginnings”, my father told me over the phone the other day. Indeed, the first time I’ve heard of this wonderkid named Lionel Messi was in 2007, while my father and I were playing Fifa on what now would be seen as an enormous computer desktop. “Some people are predicting he could be the next Maradona”, my father shares enthusiastically. Not quite the next Maradona, but more like the only ever Messi is what we got.
It’s hard to think of beginnings because you rarely know it’s a beginning. You never know when an occurrence will bring you onto a new path or open up an uncharted territory. Most of my life’s chaos has been for reasons outside of my control. But this is different, this time I am creating the chaos, I am choosing to live this, to fight. Not because I have to, but because I want to. The familiarity and joy of watching Lionel Messi play football is coming to an end like everything else in the cycle of life. However, I am forever grateful to have lived through it all and witnessed it with my own two eyes. As the saying goes, don’t be sad it’s over, be glad it happened. Here is to new beginnings, and new endings, dear reader.
